Ultrasound Scans

If you have ever heard an echo you have experienced the fundamentals of ultrasound measurement. You hear an echo when sound travels through air and reflects from a wall or mountain and comes back to your ear. If you time how long it takes for you to hear the echo you can calculate how far away the reflecting object is. The BodyMetrix™ System generates an ultrasound signal that travels through tissue and then records the reflected signal. Continuing the echo analogy, the BodyMetrix™ device plays the role of your mouth and your ear. Ultrasound waves travel in tissue and strong reflections occur at the boundary of different tissue types, for example, fat-muscle and muscle-bone.The illustration shows how the BodyMetrix™ transmits and receives pulse echos to produce a graph. The signal shows peaks (echos) from each interface (e.g. fat-muscle, muscle-muscle, and muscle-bone)

Precise Body Composition with Ultrasound Scans

Body composition is calculated by measuring subcutaneous fat thickness at multiple sites. The number of sites depend on the formula and can range from an approximate single bicep measurement to as many as 9 sites which provide an accurate measurement of body composition. The sites are illustrated below.

Body Composition Methods Comparison

 Smart scales

Affordable smart scales like InBody and Renpho, commonly found on Amazon, often lack the precision needed for accurate body composition measurements, particularly when distinguishing between muscle and fat. These scales typically use bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which sends a weak electrical current through the body to estimate various metrics. However, the accuracy of BIA is highly influenced by factors such as hydration levels, food intake, and even skin temperature. Moreover, the algorithms used in these affordable devices are often generalized, meaning they may not account for individual differences in body composition, leading to potentially inaccurate readings.

Verdict: Inaccurate

  DEXA

While DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scans are considered the gold standard for body composition analysis, they come with significant drawbacks. Firstly, DEXA scans are expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars per session, making them inaccessible for regular monitoring. Additionally, DEXA uses low-level X-rays to measure bone density, fat, and muscle mass, which, over time, can lead to cumulative radiation exposure. Although the radiation dose from a single DEXA scan is relatively low, repeated exposure, especially for individuals frequently monitoring their body composition, can increase the risk of radiation-related health issues. Therefore, while DEXA provides highly accurate results, the cost and potential health risks make it less practical for regular use.

Verdict: expensive, unhealty

 Ultrasound Body Composition

Ultrasound body composition analysis, such as that offered by BodyMetrix, is an excellent method for tracking muscle and fat during a semaglutide weight loss journey. Unlike other methods, ultrasound is non-invasive, radiation-free, and provides real-time, localized measurements of muscle and fat thickness. This allows for precise monitoring of body composition changes, which is especially important when using semaglutide, a medication that can significantly alter fat mass. Additionally, ultrasound can distinguish between subcutaneous and visceral fat, offering a more detailed understanding of how the body is responding to the treatment. Its accuracy and safety make it the preferred choice for long-term tracking without the risks associated with other methods like DEXA scans.

Verdict:   accurate, affordable.
